The Lalita Sahasranamam is held as a sacred text for the worship of the Goddess Lalita (the Divine Mother) and is used for the worship of Durga, Parvati, Kaali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Bhagavathi, etc.īasically it is a principal text of the worshipers of Goddess Shakti which takes her names in various attributes and these names are organized in the form of a hymn. It is believed that the temple at Thirumeyachur, near Kumbakonam is the place where Agastya was initiated into this Sahasranama. The above text is a dialogue between Hayagriva (an avatar of Mahavishnu) and the sage Agastya.

The Vaag Devis who composed Lalita Sahasranam are Vasini, Kameshwari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayinee, Modhinee, Sarveshwari and Koulini.Īccording to Sahasranama, one can worship Lalitha Devi only if she wishes us to do so. It is said that the Lalitha Sahasranama has been composed by eight Vaag Devis or Vaag Devatas upon the command of Lalitha. The Lalita Sahasranama begins with the name of goddess Shri Mata (the great mother), Shri Maharajni (the great queen) and Shrimat Simhasaneshwari (the queen sitting on the lion-throne). All the thousand names are organized in hymns or Stotras. Lalita Sahasranama is a Hindu text of the Brahmanda Purana which contains a thousand names of the Hindu mother goddess Lalita.
